gang violence in the black community is decreasing over the decades so black people are actually doing something about it.

gangster rap is less popular now then it was in the 90's

it's not an overnight fix. changing culture doesn't happen overnight.

"Stop Snitching" is one of the dumbest fukking concepts I've ever heard of.

A change in culture, mindset must happen.

Black father's aren't abandoning their kids enmass like people claim though.

Maybe not abandoning but the black family unit is broken, in order for a community to really progress, we need stronger family units (i.e. marriage instead of a bunch of baby mama/baby daddy situations with kids being raised by single mothers). More black men, not all but more, need to marry instead of just not wanting to stick by his family after helping create it. Kids raised by single mothers tend to do worse statistically than kids raised in 2 parent homes (not always but on average). Just stopping through to see the kid every weekend isn't enough. Black men need to be husbands/fathers in the same household.

That's not all we need to improve on, but without that foundation it's not as strong.

media/movies/books can help our culture tremendously. I remember when I was this old mans house doing a service call and told him i'd been into computers since i was 16. The shocked look on his face says it all. No other way he'd be surprised by a 16 year old liking computers if i wasn't a black man. He's been conditioned by media.....it is what it is

It all comes back to fatherlessness, imo. If you are a young man and you haven't received the type validation that only a father can provide then you will begin to seek that out in ways that are often detrimental.

By that logic you should call SOME black women to task for choosing irresponsible partners to mate with.

Stop promoting it as "cool" via hip-hop would be a start.

We need an entire change in culture and mentality. We glorify an extremely backwards mentality. I don't know OP. Honestly I'm losing hope:mjcry:

You could go on blaming hip-hop, blaming black mothers, blaming black fathers or you could go out and speak these young people individually and see what their actual problems are.

The problem there is, most people don't want to do that and as selfish as it might seem to say, that's ok. A lot of middle-class black people don't want to go to these neighborhoods, though I will say they make up a significant portion of people who do. And people who live in "the hood" mostly have more than enough on their plates.

As @JahBuhLun said, there's no stopping violence or gang violence. There's certainly curbing it but some people just want or need to go through it. Vince Staples speaking on his gang life talked about how he now views it as a form of self-harm and people who think nothing of killing someone else because they stepped on your side of town is just someone who wouldn't mind that happening to them.

Out of all the responses of blame in this thread, @AZBeauty seems to be the only one offering a solution other than banning music or sterilizing black people.

The Latin Kings have built their whole philosophy around the fact that the people in their gang need to go through that period before they essentially grow up and see the dumb shyt for what it is.

more and more black people are seeing other avenues besides gang culture.

you have black people into tech, art, non-gangster hip-hop, producing, dj'ing, photography, fashion, anime, acting, writing, video games, skateboarding. etc.

culture is changing. it's sad that some kids still get corrupted by that lifestyle but you can't save everybody.

It'll end when poverty ends. Gangs have been in hand in hand with poverty since the roman republic and likely far before. Thus it isnt gonna leave anytime soon, if not ever:yeshrug:

About gangs, when I was growing up gangs werent so bad IMO (I know that sounds crazy). I grew up and participated in gang culture. The desire to join came from 3 reasons, you were being bullied, you were broke or just happened to grow up in a neighborhood of a certain gang and other gangs just assumed you were a member. That lead to you getting your ass whooped or shot at. So I guess that kinda goes back to being bullied. Let me tell you how drastically different it is now. Back then, none of the young boys had guns. You had to ask someone in leadership and they had to green light any bullshyt you were on. If you didnt go to school you couldnt participate in any of the normal gang activity. Actually let me just speak about my people cause I was about to generalize. The guy who had it over the guys in my hood would kick your ass if he saw you during school hours, you couldnt go to the parties, you couldnt play in the basketball games we had in our field house and you basically became an outcast. If you were a good at sports you were treated like a king. You didnt disrespect your elders and wasnt allowed outside pass a certain hour just to chill if you didnt go to school. There were leaders and they acted like your father which helped for those who didnt have one. You were a bum, they bought you clothes. The new jordans came out he would buy them if you went to school and showed him your report card. Fast forward to now, all the leaders are dead or in jail. They dont need to get guns from anyone cause they can easily acquire them. They dont need to ask anyone when they want to go kill someone. They will discuss it with their like minded drugged up friends who all agree that the nikka gotta go. They have no respect for anyone or anything. They dont fear anyone because everyone is afraid of them. Yes, gangs are a problem but they are major problem because they lack leadership. We will never get rid of gangs, too many kids out here that feel like they need to belong to something in order to be somebody. The key is showing them a better life. This is the hard part because everyone is more concerned about their family, about their finances, their safety and leave these kids to become wolves. Older black folks wont take the time because they are too busy in church nodding as the preacher demonizes these kids.

I dont know what we are going to have to do but immediate action is needed. The local NAACP here set up a meeting with the justice dept to hear about stories of the black community issues with police as they are currently investigating the CPD. I posted it on facebook and even passed out flyers in my old hood trying to get the guys to come out. I called myself setting up an ambush so when they got there we would hit them with the big brother program we were trying to get started. The negros didnt even show up. This was something that could have benefited them and they didnt even show up. I just dont know how we are going to combat this. With age, the violence in our community and the way the police treat us have been weighing heavy on me. In the last 2 years I have completely changed. My family thinks im crazy. The call me Angela Davis or will tell me about some racist shyt they witnessed and ask me if I am going to go protest. Alot of us are not taking this serious and we have normalized this because this has always been our community. Its not cool, it is a hinders us as people.
