Im gonna say the late 90s. Album wise, 95-97 was phenomenal.

However the DMX, Jay, Lox, big pun, etc era had a level of lyricism that hasn't been touched since and doesn't get as much shine for some reason. the production and music vids were at a creative all time high.

in my life time probably the early 10s/late 00s. Most of the best material from the best under 40 list came out in this span of time. From 2009 to 2012 you have a pretty incredible/innovative span of music

im thinkin a lil bit larger than just hip hop tho

To me it was like 02-07 because I discovered the internet and underground acts. The mainstream was becoming trash but I discovered a whole shytload of non-mainstream artists.

Slum Village had a mainstream hit which introduced me to him, but I got into eLZhi real heavy around this time. (His underground work)

I discovered Little Brother and 9th would go on to become one of my all-time fav producers while Phonte' would become one of my all-time fav rappers. I was downloading a new 9th Wonder instrumental daily. Today, I have hundreds of 9th Wonder instrumentals that I listen to very often.

I also got into Joe Budden, Papoose, Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Blu, Termanology, Cory Guns, etc in this timeframe also. I was buying their albums and mixtapes faithfully.

Talib's "Quality", Blu's "Below the Heavens", LB's "Chittlin Circuit" & "The Minstrel Show" , Slum Villages "05" & "Slum Village" album were a few of my fav albums of the time.

Hip-hop was really good around this time, matter of fact, I was MOST into around this time period.
