When were black men FORCED to care about their hairline and having a shape-up?

My estimates say the late 80's.

why is it considered bad or ugly to not have a fresh shape-up or a perfect harline?

Something that occurs NATURALLY?

when you look at history, black men across the planet for the past hundreds of centuries and millenia leading back to our initial existence in Africa and leading up until exactly the late 1980s, NO ONE GAVE fukk ABOUT A HAIRLINE OR A SHAPE-UP.

But nowadays dudes are obsessed and pressured with having the crispiest edges ever, for no reason other than to compete with one another.
And most of this pressure comes from other black men. :dame:

Imo, this looks like a form of self-hate.

Mid 90s was probably when it was solidified as the gold standard , I wasn't conscious during those times so I'm probably not accurate but when I look at videos around that time from (94-96 ish) that's when it seem like it became the default black hair style

You are showing your age boy, I'm not that much older than you as I was born in the late 80s but if you go back to the 80s many rappers and those in the street were rocking crispy lineups and cuts in their hair and fades.

Constant line-ups were probably not a thing but brehs back in the day were definitely getting shape-ups. Nothing wrong with grooming. But if you're grooming yourself in a way to not fit into stereotypes other of groups of people believe about then I can maybe get your angle.
