Most black Americans have miniscule or zero Native American ancestry and are mixed with European ancestry (I think the average is about 25% European ancestry for African Americans) but it was easier for our older relative to explain away lighter skin by stating that we have "Indian" ancestry then to say that we are products of a slave master's/an overseer's lust
