i'd say the late 80's transitioning into the 90's was the time hip hop was most pure

It would have to be when dudes were doing it in the park for fun (and even then dudes was doing it for the girls and the hood fame)...after money gets involved nothing is pure.

I see, I was just checking if you meant innocent or artistically free. To me that Pac, Biggie, Nas era, mid 90's.

Late 80's obviously deserves a mention.

And funnily enough the underground today, people are doing ill free shyt today that's impressive.

I don't know - back then you had corny shyt like Vanilla Ice and Gerardo (as well as Hammer and PM Dawn). Oddly enough, I would say 95. The genre was fully formed and the real crass commercial stuff didn't start dropping until 96-97. This was the year of Dog Food, MATW, the Bay was popping, Infamous, OBFCL, Liquid Swords. When people thought of the South they thought of Geto Boys, Outkast (pre shoulder pads and hula skirts), Ball and G, UGK.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some hugely successful corny artist who dominated the charts in 95...

Hiphop will always be pure because it was meant to be diverse. Hip hop ain't suppose 2 just be one way, that wouldn't be real life. Everybody has a place that's what makes the culture so great.
