The early emcees role was NOT to be lyrical. Their battle was who could get the crowd the most hype, who had the loudest sound. Then they created a culture of competetion over who was the best lyricist.
So lyricism is actually a subgenre of emceeing, not a requirement. But its really only ever been a sub genre in New York. The emcee who could get the crowd most energized, who had the loudest sound/beats for the speakers has been a constant in every other region. The competetion of who could be the most lyrical didnt really come to fruition anywhere else in mass.
And really if you judge emcees off who gets the crowd the most energized FIRST. Then off who has the best beats, then off of lyricism, you would probably get decent goat rankings. My unbias list based on this criteria
1.2Pac
2.Biggie
3.Ice Cube
4.LL Cool J
5.DMX
6.Jay-Z
7.Nas
8.T.I
9.Kendrick
10.Jeezy
