I'll probably be back in Japan in the next 1-2 years. There is a favorable rate right now between the yen and the USD. I'm in NYC. In the past I got yen at Citibank (something like 299 Park Avenue), then I also exchanged at whatever the most popular Yelp result is, but if I was going to buy 2-5 thousand USD-worth, where is the best place to buy?

You get the official exchange rate from an ATM. Even if you wired yourself big money yes that will cost you but both banks would pay the official rate

@Wiseborn the issue here is that I don't plan to travel to Japan this exact year, and by the time that I do make it to an ATM over there, I don't think that the rate will still be as favorable for Americans.

@SadimirPutin between $2000-5000

Definitely not the airport.... Do they still require you to declare your currency if you exceeded a certain amount? I remember flying to Manila and if you had more than 10,000 pesos you had to declare it which was dumb cuz it was like 200 bucks lol

In my experience traveling locals will give you the best informal exchange rate and it will usually be better slightly than the official rate by banks and currency exchange vendors

Honestly just watch the current rate posted online for about 2-3 months and see what happens....it honestly shouldn't deviate or swing wildly like that( lol because actual useful currencies are meant to be stable and not rollercoasters like that crypto nonsense masquerading as a real currency)

2k-5k sounds like something a local can get swung for you reasonably easy
