Lyrically though was up there. Artist wise maybe never top 5, but lyrically he was a high level.

His lyricism lacks replay value. Initially impressive, enjoyed on the rare occasion. Highly technical lyrical wizardry appeals to the intellect, which isn't the highest quality we seek in lyricism. Once you understand the techniques they do nothing for you. But lyricism with aesthetic and musical value continue to reward you long after you stop finding them as clever, long after they've lost all meaning.

Intelligent ideas become obvious . Powerful emotions age gracefully.

I don't agree, cause I understand the the techniques yet I was playing Can-I-Bus today and loved it. The lyricism on something like Channel Zero I thought was absolutely exceptional, it's not only aged well, but I appreciate it even more now, it was SO far ahead of the time the shyt he was saying. I thought the whole album was tremendous really. And again technically Rakim, Big Pun etc still impress me and the skills sound as ill to me as ever. There's a bunch of Bis lyricism that has great replay value to me. I don't think it just appeals to the intellect, again you take Channel Zero and that also delves into someone's morality and enlightenment and world view even. You consider the time it was in and the climate and it makes it even more masterful to me. Again I disagree, I get what your saying from a general perspective but not specifically this case. I agree emotional lyricism is just as valuable, but intellect also can be nutritious too, I can play KRS songs from Edutainment and be very impressed still, there's a balance that is possible. I disagree with that and feel it's a dangerous road to go down, we need art, we don't dismiss a painting because it used techniques. Canibus on something like Dead By Design and so many other songs can touch emotion too. I loved what he did on the video track from Melatonin Magik too, was really dope. I can still bump those songs on a regular.

Up until the Rip The Jacker album, I had him in my Top 10. After that I kinda lost interest in what he had to say.

But as far as lyricists go, he will always be in my Top 10 best lyricists ever.

I will admit that I grow weary of feelings sometimes and seek more intelligent entertainment from time to time. There are days when I just want to hear the most intellectually challenging music to stimulate my brain.

I feel that Rakim, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, had something in addition to their immense technical skills.

You're right, it's a dangerous road to totally single out and dismiss extreme technicality from an art form. There are days when I seek out technicality for its own sake.

Canibus has a few songs which I find somewhat replayable. It's just my appetite for that kind of rap isn't that strong, even though I crave it strongly sometimes. My post mostly applies to me, I guess. We're all different.

Yeah bro, I think balance is key, I will say there's been times I've wanted Bis to open up more emotionally too. I feel like he has been doing that at times though, like the Melatonin Magik album, some songs on that I felt he was pouring out his heart and soul, it was just in a lyrical way too. Other ish too, he has a girl song with G Rap I liked too lol. I get what your saying, in terms of personal preference and shyt and that's completely valid. Like I said I think balance is best. Where one can adapt dependent on certain situations/tracks.

He is like an and1 street baller he sweet at rapping but he never put it all together and made anything hot. Outside of 4321 I could care less if I hear any music the guy made.
