Where Is the Most Diverse City in the U.S.?
by JILLIAN SEDERHOLM

When it comes to overall diversity of cities, Maryland and California come out on top.

Both states boast four cities each in the top 10 most diverse cities in the U.S. by race, class, economic and household diversity.

A study from WalletHub compared more than 300 of the nation's most populated cities, looking at the household diversity, social class diversity, ethno-racial diversity, and economic diversity of each to determine the overall most diverse city in the U.S.

"Diversification is nothing to be feared," researchers said, stating that it often leads to economic growth and social mobility.

"As a result of the fresh perspectives, skills and technologies brought in by newcomers, the U.S. has developed a strong adaptability to change."

Here's a look at the country's top 10 most diverse cities as determined by WalletHub:

  1. Gaithersburg, Maryland
  2. Jersey City, New Jersey
  3. Oakland, California
  4. Silver Spring, Maryland
  5. Germantown, Maryland
  6. New York, New York
  7. San Jose, California
  8. Frederick, Maryland
  9. Anaheim, California
  10. Sacramento, California

it's filled with rich cacs ever since the cost of living skyrocketed there.

there are some pockets of minorities in the south sf and surrounding suburbs, but most moved out the city. nothing like it was 20-30 years ago.

:dahell: Based on what? Oakland always been the immigrant hub of the Bay going back to the early 20th century, the Southern Pacific terminus was in West Oakland and since the 60s all of the refugee populations (Cambodians, Bosnians, Iraqis, etc.) have been housed in Oakland. San Francisco has literally been taken over largely by white techies from the Midwest, the only immigrants moving into SF are Chinese socialites who are buying up property. Oakland been more diverse than San Francisco for a minute. The only exception is the Latin population, SF has more Central and South Americans.
