Where the Blue Jays Game 7’s loss in the 2025 World Series ranks among the worst final losses in professional sports history?

In NFL terms, this is as bad, devastating, cruel and heartbreaking as the Seahawks fumbling away the title to the patriots when they trailed by 4 points with 26 seconds in the game ( the score was 28-24 patriots at the time ) but didn’t give the ball to running back Marshawn lynch who was right there and ready to score at the 1-yard line in the Super Bowl. They could have won the game if they just let him run the ball and score. Instead They chose to make a pass play but Russell Wilson’s pass was later intercepted by cornerback Malcolm butler. This clutch interception secured the patriots SB win.

(Or the 2021 AFC divisional game between the chiefs and the bills but it was not the superbowl.)

In soccer/internstional football: The 2004-05 AC Milan loss in the champions league against Liverpool.

In nba terms: The 2013 san antonio spurs having a 3-2 series lead but losing both game 6 and 7 to the Miami heat in the 2013 nba finals. In game 6, They were leading 95-92 and were 5 seconds away from a NBA title, but ray Allen clutch 3-point shot tied the game. After that, the heat won game 6 in Overtime 103-100, then the spurs never recovered and lost game 7 of the the finals and the NBA championship in a very close affair by a 95-88 score.

In hockey terms: 2004 Cinderella Calgary flames having a 3-2 series lead but losing game 6 and 7 to the Tampa bay lightning in the 2004 Stanley cup finals.

I don’t follow college football, college basketball, college hockey, college baseball, CFL, MLS, Canadian junior hockey league(memorial cup), rugby, cricket, etc at all so I can’t make similar and proper comparisons between the most heartbreaking final moments of their sports/leagues and the blue jays loss in this WS.

I wonder about the Individual sports like tennis, formula 1, boxing, ufc, golf, etc? What was their equivalents to the 2025 World Series loss ?

1984 Roland Garros Final. John McEnroe up 2 sets to love against Ivan Lendl. Then ends up losing 3 straight sets to lose the match. Ended up unfortunately being the last chance for Job McEnroe to win a Roland Garros title

2025 Roland Garros Final. Jannik Sinner was up 2 sets to 1 against Carlos Alcaraz. Also had 3 fukking match points and couldn't close the deal, ended up losing in the 5 set

2016 Warriors vs Cavs. Warriors up 3-1 then lose the series lead and ended up in a Game 7 where they were up in the game, and got hit with the shot (Kyrie), the block (Lebron), and the stop (Kevin Love) to lose the Finals

1980. John Tate was world WBA Boxing champion, was up on all the score cards heading into the 12th round. Mike Weaver started coming on strong in earlier rounds while Tate started to gas out. Weaver put it on strong in the 12th round and eventually knocked Tate out in a huge upset

Seahawks and Warriors were worst imo

Falcons the worst L in the history of life

Up 28-3 but throw more than the team down 25 :dahell:

My 3 worst L’s ever

Game 6 lakers vs Suns 2006 & game 4 lakers vs celtics 2008

Lions vs niners 2023

Those 3 L’s had me sick
at least these Seahawks and Warriors teams won chips the year before . They have already tasted success with their cores. And the warriors core ( green, curry, klay, iguodala) won 3 other chips over the next 6 years. Seahawks just destroyed the broncos in the SB the year before…so at least both teams had some consolation

Jays lost in their World Series appearance since 1993.
Falcons lost in their first Super Bowl appearance since 1999(well the 1998-99 season)

falcons never went back to the big show after that embarrassing collapse against the pats, they never came close since

The jays…well I don’t know how they will perform next year. Baseball is a fickle sport with too much random variance/unpredictability from season to season, from game to game . Teams need everything going their way to win. Talent, skill and execution obviously Matter in baseball but we should realize that chemistry, team spirit, mental strength, injuries and luck plays a bigger role in baseball than in most sports, except hockey.

And the jays WS loss was more painful to witness and accept than the falcons 28-3 loss personally and objectively. I admit I’m biased, of course I’m a jays fan, I’m far more emotionally invested in them, I have no attachment to the falcons lol. I don’t care about them

Objectively? The Falcons were up 28-3 in a one game series with one quarter left in the game. They had a million opportunities to ice the game and squandered each one. I think they had like a 99.7% win probability in the 4th quarter.

They've never been back to the Superbowl and probably won't in the next 20 years.

Cards beating the Rangers in 2011 was worse. If Cruz catches this they win the game and Championship. No one could have caught Rojas' HR.
