They're both diverse.

In NYC, the segregated groups live a little closer together and intermingle a bit more via subways, sidewalks....
LA the segregated groups are more...segregated, separated by trees and shyt...and everyone is in their own bubble of cars and scenes...

NYC. Without question. LA is almost 50% Hispanic. Mexicans dominate that city now. No one racial/ethnic group dominates NYC.

The racial/ethnic/cultural composition of Los Angeles as of the 2005-2009 American Community Survey was as follows:

NYC
  • White alone - 2,733,605 (32.8%)
  • Hispanic - 2,406,890 (28.9%)
  • Black alone - 1,885,882 (22.6%)
  • Asian alone - 1,084,547 (13.0%)
  • Two or more races - 132,854 (1.6%)
  • Other race alone - 76,855 (0.9%)
  • American Indian alone - 12,708 (0.2%)
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 3,356 (0.04%)

I not believing NYC has a higher pacific islander population than LA, something fishy about that but other than that NYC wins with just about every group.

Yes Mexicans are def in the majority are out here in LA...but there are ethnic pockets all over the region if you know where to look...Korean, Northern/Southern Thai, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Cantonese, Szechwan, Brazilian, Samoan, Filipino, etc...

When you're in Koreatown...it pretty much looks and feels like you're in Seoul. The separation of the ethnicities has its pro's and con's...but one plus is that it preserves the authenticity of the cultures. I've been put on to so much good ethnic food out here :ohlawd:

basically.

LA loses on account of its not geographically limited to a particular area.

When people say LA they're referring to dozens of actual cities.

exactly. first off, its a silly question cause we all have different definitions of "diversity"...but other than that, NYC is one large city, while LA is essentially 20 different cities across 4 or 5 different counties.

new york is also an older city. you have clear distinctions between italians...n irish people..n greek people. in california, them nikkas is just white.

the obvious answer is also which city is geographically closer to the country of origin. LA has more asians cause its closer to asia. New york has more europeans cause its closer to europe.
