canibus.

Wayne.

Quoted for emphasis. "A Milli" is probably to this day the most popular mainstream song to have straight bars. Never heard another song in that context to be as successful.

Canibus had the biggest influence on lyricism hands down. Even Em acknowledged him in a roundabout way. Canibus influenced Lupe, King Los, J Cole, Kendrick, and all the BARS rappers to come after him.

what I'm saying is, they didn't shift the game like people think. they get way too much credit.

there were plenty of guys before them.

people seem to think everybody was rapping like run dmc before rakim came out.

most of the rappers wrote their stuff back then breh.

beasties just weren't emcees like that.

if you think some other emcees advanced the game as much as they did then name some names breh

:obama:

The only reason I mentioned the beasties and run dmc is because they were out in '86 when rakim came out. Utfo was nice widdit too but rakim was just that much ahead of them in terms of lyrics.

I just feel like rakim, kane, and g rap laid down that technical blueprint. Especially g rap the more I think about it

Jay Z & Nas both made it cool to not sacrifice their art and kept it lyrically their whole rap careers. let me add KRS One to that list too.
