essentially who is the best undisputed champion in the 4 belt era?

Only 7 men have held all four versions of the belts and been an undisputed world champion.

  1. Bernard Hopkins unified all four middleweight titles in September 2004.[*]
  2. Jermain Taylor won all four middleweight titles from Hopkins in July 2005.[*]
  3. Terence Crawford unified all four light welterweight titles in August 2017.
  4. Oleksandr Usyk unified all four cruiserweight titles in the inaugural World Boxing Super Series tournament in July 2018.
  5. Josh Taylor unified all four light welterweight titles in May 2021.
  6. Canelo Álvarez unified all four super middleweight titles in November 2021.
  7. Jermell Charlo unified all four light middleweight titles in May 2022.

7 and 5 are close for the overall level of comp on the road. 1 and 4 had to beat the best opponents last to finally unify though.

bhop out of all of them took the longest to even unify a belt never mind all 4 and the only reason why he got that shot is because don king wanted tito to take over the 160 division and thought he would beat bhop lol

usyk unified his belts in a tournament and won them away from his home country

those are my picks

Out of all 7 of them Tito is the best win easily. I don't know who was a better opponent out of Gassiev and Castano though between Usyk and Mell. Usyk had an easier time with Gassiev, but Mell and Castano was such an interesting stylistic clash, I high key want a third fight. Lol

I’ve always held Taylor beating Hopkins two times in a row in extremely high regard.

The politics of boxing make becoming undisputed damn near impossible. Knowing this, I’m definitely going to favor someone that had to go collect the belts in a very political sport like boxing.

Hopkins is impressive because he really had to grind over the years to even get to that point. Not only that, he did it in a glamour division, where there’s more resistance.

Canelo, Charlo, Crawford, & Taylor collected belts as well, but did it in the non glamour divisions.

Jermain did it just off one fight, so can’t put him. Usky was in a tournament designed to create an undisputed, which is why i wouldn’t put him either.

I’m not dimishing anyone’s accomplishments, but based on the question, I think Hopkins had the toughest road.

Jermell Charlo and Bernard Hopkins. Modern times it's definitely Jermell Charlo. If you want to go by how it should be done, look at Charlo. Was a champion in the division for years, lost to Harrison and then had to win the belt back, had to outlast the round robin of Jared Hurd/Rosario/j rock, almost lost a controversial draw the first crack at the 4 belts and then wins them all in the rematch in a dramatic fashion. Charlo (and Hopkins) had to have the endurance, resilience and patience to become undisputed.

When did the WBO become important? It seemed like it went from being a title only Europeans fought for to being up there with the big 3 over night. Even when it became needed to be undisputed it didn't felt like it took time for people to get on board.

I would like to see how people compare the first 7 undisputed in the 2 belt era, 3 belt era and the 4 belt era

I’d be interested in that as well.
