@observe . Thanks for recommending this and putting it on your Best Picture of 2014 list. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.
Whiplash features the brilliant acting of Miles Teller, who plays a up and coming drummer named Andrew who is obsessed with being one of the best jazz drummers ever. Andrew is spurred on by his abusive and equally obsessed music instructor, Fletcher, who is played by J.K. Simmons. When I say dude is abusive, I mean, this Fletcher guy not only psychologically berates and belittles those under his instruction, but he also physically slaps them around. My mouth dropped open the first time Andrew auditioned for Fletcher. It was shocking and brutal display of how a teacher can exploit not only power but a student's need for validation. The movie takes us for a roller coaster ride as Andrew tries to gain Fletcher's approval and his own goal to be the best. Along the way, there are sacrifices. At first, it's easy to say that Andrew and Fletcher's obsession and relationship are bad and dysfunctional, especially when things come to a head in a violent series of events during the third act. But then in an amazing final act, Andrew, Fletcher, and the movie itself take a dramatic left turn and do the unexpected- it makes you question your ideas about "good", "bad", dysfunctional, and even the concept of love. Wonderful and realistic script, and very effective cinematography and direction. This movie isn't only a story about a jazz drummer or the dedication and work behind good jazz music. It becomes jazz itself, taking a simple riff and twisting it so that it touches the viewer in unexpected ways.
5 out of 5 for sure. Teller deserves a Best Actor nod, but it's a crowded year for that category, so he may not get it.
