It started as a more familial term of endearment/nickname, particularly in the hood. I knew a lot of "Pookie's" growing up it was never said in a romantic context.

Then "Pookie, Ray Ray and Tyrone" became stereotypical names to use for cacs and black nerd types mad that all the women they want clamor after hood nikkas.

Now it's come back around to being endearing and even romantic.
