FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Colorado State University student is facing several charges after he allegedly stole an ambulance and attacked deputies after being taken into custody, according to KMGH.
Stefan Sortland, 18, is charged with aggravated vehicle theft, obstructing EMS, reckless driving, hit-and-run, criminal mischief, attempted motor vehicle theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and assault.
Police said emergency crews with Poudre Valley Hospital were treating an intoxicated student for seizures on the CSU campus Sunday morning. When they came outside with the patient, their ambulance was gone.
The ambulance had GPS system on board and was tracked to Loveland, Colo. Officers found the ambulance in the middle of U.S. 34 with several doors open and heavy front-end damage.
One officer told KMGH it appeared Sortland hit the raised median, jumped the curb, hit a sign, went the wrong way and crossed back over the median before stopping.
Officers found Sortland standing about 30 yards from the wrecked ambulance. He was wearing an EMT vest and had a blanket, cell phone and box of Wheat Thins with him. Officers shot him with a stun gun when he refused their commands.
Sortland was taken to the Loveland Police Department station. There, he “stood on a bench, kicked the wall and masturbated,” according to the police report.
During an interview with officers, Sortland said his “friends/roommates were dead, in heaven and had committed suicide.”
Officers checked with the two people Sortland mentioned and both were fine. One told officers they had been had been at a Halloween concert with Sortland and that Sortland had been kicked out.
Sortland admitted to police that he had taken “molly” and cocaine while at the concert.
As Sortland was being taken to the jail he apologized to officers for his actions. However, a few hours later he attacked two deputies who were bringing him lunch.
Sortland is accused of punching one deputy, causing a concussion and facial swelling. Another deputy suffered an abrasion and finger sprain while trying gain control of Sortland.
Sortland’s bond was set at $15,000 on Monday and he was due back in court on Nov. 7, according to the Coloradoan.
