From what the OP is saying the repairs are $14k and the car is worth $17k. So the insurance company will pay the Finance company $17k.
Who here has ever had their vehicle declared totalled by their insurance

Ok well in this case he will owe the finance company nothing (assuming he owes them 17k) and will still need to get another car
