at the tail end of the summer of '97, UPN & FOX both went to bat with late-night urban shows. i believe these were the 1st late shows to cater to urban america since arsenio was cancelled.

FOX had the "keenan ivory wayans" show while UPN had "VIBE" which was hosted by chris spencer. he got booted after a couple months and was replaced by sinbad. keenan's show didnt last all that long. i dont remember how long it was on the air, but i remember it eventually went off and in its place - they started airing magic johnson's show; which i thought was wack.

i think both shows debuted on the same night as well. it was something like a big deal. most of your favorite artists, actors, athletes & entertainers at the time appeared on one or both of those shows. and they stayed with MUST-SEE PERFORMANCES.

That sh1t got out of hand,
They was trying to compete with the popular Springer show at the time.
Arsenal Hall was the urban night show ever.

Springer? That wasn't even a late night talk show. I'm pretty sure it was "competing" against Letterman and Leno, but all they ultimately did was cancel each other out by tapping into the urban demographic.

Anyways, the Keenan Ivory Wayans show was the shyt. I remember Michael Jordan was one of the first guests on there. Vibe (with the Quincy Jones machine behind it) had good guests early on as well, despite Chris Spencer being trash. It got better when Sinbad became the permanent host though.

^^this was when the springer show was REALLY off the hook and mired in controversy. and they gave it that 10pm(or whatever) timeslot.

i dont know if these shows were really meant to go head up with springer but i wouldnt be surprised. and they were definitely attracting alot more of the same viewers as vibe/keenan than leno & letterman were.

as far as cancelling each other out goes - maybe. but i remember vibe eventually moved its timeslot up, which is why i watched it much more than keenan's show. i dont even remember most of the these keenan clips that im scrolling thru on youtubes.
