They did an about face after the African Colonization Society hopped on their back to Africa movement. They said "nah, we staying right here" off of principle even though they really did wanted to go back and resettle.

Check out David Walker. He wrote about black unity and uniting to end slavery and black suffering worldwide in 1829. He was poisoned in Boston in 1830.
