The jagaloons at ESPN keep a weekly running tab on the Heisman hopefuls...

LINK: 2016 Heisman Watch - Heisman Trophy Candidates - ESPN

1. Nick Chubb (RB) - Georgia

Less than a year after going down with a serious knee injury, Chubb opened the season looking like his previous dominant self. On 32 carries, Chubb plowed his way through the North Carolina defense for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also clinched Georgia's 33-24 win with a 55-yard dash late in the game. The 222 yards were the second-highest FBS total of the week and the third-most ever by a Georgia player against a ranked opponent.

2. Christian McCaffrey (RB) - Stanford

McCaffrey finished with 210 all-purpose yards (126 rushing, 40 receiving, 28 in kickoff returns and 16 in punt returns) as the Cardinal took care of Kansas State, 26-13. McCaffrey also had a 97-punt return touchdown called back on a penalty. But later he put the Wildcats away with a 41-touchdown scamper in the game's final two minutes.

3. DeShaun Watson (QB) - Clemson

Though he wasn't spectacular, Watson was solid in Clemson's 19-13 road victory at Auburn. Watson completed 19 of 34 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown. He also tossed an interception. Watson will have better performances and more than enough opportunities ahead to stake his Heisman campaign.

4. Greg Ward Jr. (QB) - Houston

In Houston's 33-23 win over third-ranked Oklahoma, Ward outperformed his Sooners counterpart Baker Mayfield, who placed fourth in last year's Heisman voting. Ward, who finished with 321 yards passing and two touchdowns, was especially lethal in key moments to propel the Cougars, completing 9 of 11 passes for 147 yards on third downs.

5. JT Barrett (QB) - Ohio State

With the job firmly his again, Barrett exploded for a school-record seven touchdowns (six passing, one rushing) in Ohio State's 77-10 rout of Bowling Green. With Barrett running the attack, the Buckeyes also set a school record with 776 yards on offense, passing a mark that had stood in Columbus for 86 years.
