I'm actually not surprised that Toronto is dominating pop now. Canada is USA's next door neighbor. And to me, Toronto as a city has always been more pop-oriented than anything. After that, you have reggae/soca scenes for Black folk and rock scenes for White folk.

By the time Drake came out, you had Lil Wayne/Kanye/Eminem/Jeezy etc - pop artists that watered down hip hop to pathetic levels. With the bar being low enough for entry, a dude like Drake who is genuinely smart and pop-oriented can sneak in and make it big.
