As an atheist who has argued against belief in God, I believe I might be able to answer that question, at least in my particular case.
A lot of staunch atheists were raised in fundamentalist religious families. From infancy, they're indoctrinated with fairy tales about a personal god. They may have been taught that they will never die or that they will go to heaven or get resurrected or whatever. As they grow older and investigate such marvelous claims thoroughly, they realize the lack of evidence for them and the impact of the hollow promises hits them like a ton of bricks. They're struck with an overwhelming feeling of meaninglessness and may develop a nihilistic viewpoint. They truly face an existential crisis. Unlike children in secular families (even some that may profess one religion or another), they weren't raised to accept life on its own terms. Some resort to self-destructive behaviors like drug and alcohol abuse. Others find a permanent rift form between them and closest family members based on belief. The impact that these dangerous and objectively silly myths have had on their life frustrates the hell out of them, especially if they squandered youthful potential in their "spiritual" pursuits. So yeah some atheists, myself included, are pissed the fukk off.
We're not angry at God because we don't believe he exists. It'd be a waste of energy. We are angry at how the idea has affected our personal lives and society in general.
