New research is being done at Colombia to try to figure this out. The military has been studying black women for awhile, they still can't come up with anything. Actually, they did. I haven't kept up with the study. I think it comes down to survival. The more you are coddled, the more you are, well, weak.

http://thegrio.com/2012/06/13/black...-studied-for-prevention-of-military-suicides/

For the past 30 years, year after year after year black women have the lowest suicide ratest of every gender and race group in America.

Considering black women are the probably one of the least supported and the second most targerted group on the planet, high level of single parenthood, economically disadvantaged, constant studies to tell them how 'undesirable' they are, they still have the highest level of self esteem amoung younger women and the lowest suicide rates.

Why do you think this is ?

Some think it is because black women are use to having no privilege. I am not saying that no black women have privilege, but as a group, in America black women have little to no privilege collectively. IMO.

So when life gets tough its just business as usual. perhaps ? :ld:

In your personal opinion why do you think black women are the group in America less likely to kill themselves compared to everyone else? Perhaps if people can find out why these coping mechanisms can be used to help other groups.

btw @concise don't move my shyt. This is a mental health/serious thread not a race baiting thread.

Good thread.

It definitely has to do with slavery and our ancestors going through that trauma and still surviving if that makes any sense. From slave auctions and families being ripped apart to the prison industrial complex ripping families apart, it's just a burden black women definitely carry and not for the good tbh. Because the complaints of attitudes is our way of releasing that bottled up emotion and being tough and hard. Every other woman gets to be feminine and delicate and gets to be saved, but black women, no way we gotta lift ourselves up and save our damn selves. To the point where we shut out those most important to us - black men.

Excellent summation

And to put it in simplier terms.
We'd never chose to give up when the going
gets tough.

And we laugh at our pain and dance, and live through it. That's why black culture is so vibrant and black people are just so damn funny and talented. Cause we learned to just laugh at ourselves and sing through our problems.
