Why are so many modern anime's so generic?

"Defeat the demon king" , "betrayed by my party", "considered to be the weakest but secretly has the strongest skill", "magical academy", "a fantasy setting that's based on medieval Europe", "transported to another world", etc the list goes on and on. So many recent anime's follow these generic plots. A generic plot isn't inherently bad but so many recent anime's don't even do a good job of trying to be creative :snoop:

Most likely because anime is mainstream now. Once any medium becomes mainstream, it lends itself to a lot of hacks and template tracers to enter the chat. So originality goes down and mimicry goes up, just off the strength of influx of sheer numbers game. You get tried and true and evergreen rather than experimental and unique.

For me, anime tends to go through this cycle. You'll get some good ones, everybody tries to copy them and makes everything boring, and then something comes out that's actually interesting.
