Why are weight machines so popular at the gym?

Because people are lazy and they want a machine to do part of the work for them

People say these aren't good yet they stay getting heavy usage at the gym...?
Less chance of an injury. For example, my knees are fukked up and I have to be very careful with my back, so if I want to train my legs and back, I prefer using machines for some muscle groups :yeshrug:

I use them both.

Free weights for all the major compounds, machines for some accessory work.

Machines are only an issue when people over rely on them, like people who can barely squat two plates to depth but can throw 7-8 on each side of the leg press.

But considering squats and deadlifts are 'cac exercises' according to The Coli, that's probably 90% of this board.

Because they are safer (especially if recovering from injury) or for people who are not as advanced in lifting techniques. Lack of proper form can at best, hinder your workout and recovery and at worst seriously fukk you up. Free weights should be left to people with experience.
