I know the stock answers are "afraid of ridicule and backlash" but if it really happened, why not put blame on the dude. Not to diminish the act but if it's not a celeb or athlete, wouldn't the general public believe the woman?

My perspective is believing the victim so don't come with that other bs, i'm just trying to understand.

The entire process from collecting evidence to the emotional blame game to the shame of not being able to protect yourself from being violated to the accusations of lying to the reliving of the crime, etc. etc. are some of the reasons that the majority of sexual crimes go unreported.

Pretty much this, OP. Anyone who has been to court for anything, even so much as a ticket for a moving violation, can tell you that shyt sucks.

Imagine having to do that, having to correspond with police, deal with your people feeling mad sorry for you all the time or even in some cases abandoning

you altogether...in the aftermath of rape, it adds a layer of humiliation. shyt ain't easy.

And another thing....victims who happen to be black women are not treated with the same delicacy that 'other' women receive during the process. The rape kit process and being interviewed by jaded law enforcement is like a victimization all over again. Black women victims are often treated with dismissive contempt by those who are supposed to protect and serve. Also, if the perpetrator is unknown it could take years before a suspect is caught...if ever. So the thought of knowing that the person who raped you still walks among you is terrifying.

For the guys who are tempted to

Rape is usually not always about sex but about power, dominance and control.

How many women with little power or influence would make the accusation against a prominent, wealthy, beloved celebrity? It happens but real victims are usually reluctant to make the charge due to the "blame the victim" mentality of the general public.

But the Bill Cosby situation is not what the average victim of rape is dealing with.

The cosby situation is most likely a media job to tear him apart for some move he's trying to make that wasn't liked. The fact that they made a cosby rape joke at an awards show tell me this is a set-up. If he was really doing his thing like that, they'd be adamant in throwing him in prison. He's supposedly a rape machine, but they're not making any real efforts to get him locked up, but are making jokes about him?

Now I have nothing but the utmost sympathy for women that are really raped. On the other hand, I find it utterly disgusting those who would use false rape allegations as some kind of tool in their political toolbelt. It makes it harder for REAL victims to come forward and be taken seriously.
