Nintendo is a side console, been like that to me since N64.But being real for being a side console,Next to a sony console,Sega or Microsoft console...it still held its own in terms of fun compared to third party titles on those other console.

On a bad year they sit at around 17 billion dollars.
They can afford numerous consecutive years of dismal sales and at least three back to back generations of failed consoles before they would even have to have that hypothetical conversation.
Even if Pokemon never released another game the only thing even approaching it in franchising dollars is Disney's Princess line.

Thats what I mean about context. The reason they are doing things that seem weird, or missing out on what seems like obvious oppritunities is because they aren't focused on the same things the other companies are.
Its fascinating watching an entire gaming expo, because Sony & Microsoft will reference one another and Nintendo presents things as if no one else even exists. Its very strange to see in practice.
Just looking at dollars or how much money a company has in the bank says next to nothing. Their CEOs and investors have been extremely conservatives for decades and its obviously been lucrative for them. Wii U is just a COMPLETE miss. Im actually surprised Iwata hasn't been bounced out of town for it.
Actually, they are using that technology in the Wii U right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if the first flying cars say Nintendo on the hood.
