I'm inclined to add something to this.
Some people don't arrive at their political beliefs on their own, they repeat the views of another source (often verbatim). Because they are reading from somebody else's script, they can't defend or debate their stance.
Found this out the hard way after assuming that people debate in good faith. Clown tactics come out when people are faced with facts they can't dispute.
Most definitely. Add emotional attachment to the person they derive their ideas from (parents, friends and family) and you get why most political convos get very messy.
I believe there is also a potent societal pressure on individuals to appear coherent and right at all times. Multiplied for those in the spotlight.
Only scientists will regularly admit to being wrong.
