Why couldn't Scottie Pippen lead the superteam Houston Rockets and the incredibly deep 99-2000 Blazers to a NBA title?

For houston they were old

for the blazers, in 00 they just ran into an all time duo + best coach.

Also, he simply wasnt the same after the Bulls. Immedaitely went from consistent 20ppg to 12-14ppg.

— Kobe

— Shaq

— Duncan

— Pippen was playing with old name brand dudes and it wasn’t 1995 anymore

— Pippen could easily lead a team in this iffy era but despite what he did while Michael was away (with a great cast around him), he’s not that guy — which obviously would be a controversial take

— When you get spoiled by being with the best player ever later on you finally realize what he had to do in order to do it all the time

— Would’ve fared better on a team in the east because the west became all Spurs and Lakers

— He won a lot in Chicago but being there really screwed him up from the front office all the way to being an eternal sidekick and then leaving and not being able to deliver for his new teams

Because Pippen wasn't that great of a leader. He was a Robin. In Houston that team was washed up and Scottie was too busy beefing with Barkley.

But Portland had a very talented team with a mix of young talent and veterans. They were 2nd in the west without him, even though they got swept by Spurs in conference finals.

Scottie was a 6 time champion who was supposed to give them a championship experience...and he wasn't controlling the locker room with all that Jail Blazers shyt going throughout the years. You put Wizards Mike on that team instead of Pippen and they are beating Lakers in game 7 because they'd look at Mike way more serious than Scottie Pippen.

Understand that at the time Scottie Pippen was around 35 years old and he had a ton of mileage on him because of all the success he had with Chicago. The man was playing a lot of games, and a lot of minutes for a decade.

Being a 35 year old player back then was practically ancient. Asking him to carry a team to a championship would have been silly. Though he was still pretty good.

This was long before the league would see guys like Curry, Durant and Lebron remain effective players at 35+.

Because he was the greatest Robin of all time but wasn’t that guy as Batman.

Portland was up 15 late 3rd/early 4th in the WCF game 7(to be fair, on the road). They needed a vet to get them home - precisely the reason Scottie was brought in and he couldn't do it.

Above the fray.
That Blazers collapse was based on the team going cold from the field, and the NBA fix, as Portland players drove to the hoop, drew contact and no whistle.

As the pplayoffs/Finals vet, with rings, Pip was supposed to take charge at some point...because the jitter/pressure was getting to his teammates.

He blew a big late game 3 pointer that might have helped them stem the tide.

That loss was all Pippen? Sabonis was 1-3 in the 4th. Stoudamire was 0-3 in the 4th. Sheed was 2-7 in the 4th. It wasn't just Pippen who got cold. He was also getting old as fukk at that point with various injuries and miles on him
