Why did the Afrocentricity we saw in the early 90s seem to die out?

Didn’t they have a secret meeting with all the music execs in ‘91 to address “how rap should move forward”? If I’m not mistaken they steered hip hop into full gangster mode and that was that.

By 93 you had to be sexual or gangsta in rap or it was looked at as corny

Afrika Bambaataa, KRS-1 Chuck D... All those guys are bombers in their 60s; born before the voting rights act & the civil rights act so Civil Rights era themes about black unity and rebellion were a big part of their music IMO.

But by the 90s, there was a war on drugs and a generation of black kids growing up in integrated white suburbs with different concerns.
