to be honest, i prefer this quality over today's quality, just something about the quality of those late 90's videos make it look official.

Yeah that was because the budgets back then were insane, so rappers had the over glossy and flashy looking videos. It was just the style then. So the quality was extremely high. So even artists that weren't major sellers had bigger video budgets than some artists now that are much bigger. Just a different era.

Hype wasn't shooting videos under a mil back then lol

but what kind of cameras were they using back then that can't capture that same quality today?? It's like the HD cams we got today gives it a different look than it was back then... it's been eating at me for a while trying to figure this out

Budgets slashed. I'm talking, 5 times lower. A million dollar video used to take 3, 4 days to shoot. 50 video girls. Now that's 200k and the whole thing done in a day. 5 video girls.

This is a fun video but there's like 30 people in the whole thing. Looks like it was shot in a day. 1 location

Compared to your run of the mill video in 2000

You know what is really fukked up?
The artist had to eventually pay for those million dollar videos before they seen even a cent of album sales royalties!

Bigger budgets = greater equipment talking hollywood grade shyt, production teams, etc. This is especially because movie soundtracks were a big thing, and a lot of movie soundtracks also came with music videos, so they had that hollywood budget behind it with hollywood ppl involved. It also wasn't uncommon to see a lot of movie stars and various celebrities cameo in music videos as well.

Nowadays, anyone an HD cam and Avid/Final Cut is out here making videos....along with the fact that people really don't give a fukk about music videos like that anymore. This is why MTV , BET and VH-1 show more TV shows that music videos now.
