Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
America, Rome and the Slow Erosion of Republics

This interview got me interested in more details....

" It started because there was a revolution in the way the Roman economy worked in the mid-second century that created massively wealthy people. They were entitled by law to this wealth, but it did not feel fair. They were doing this when most Romans were not getting the full advantages of this economic revolution. This was a political problem that could have been solved through law and through electoral politics, but the republic could not come up with consensus-based policies to address this wealth inequality fast enough to eliminate anger and resentment. And it was in the 130s BCE that politicians began to demagogue on this issue."

one of the members of the triumvirate, Crassus had his own fire department.

if your house was on fire they’d offer to buy it from you for a fraction of its price and give you a bit of land on it. if you said no theyd just sit there and watch it burn :wow:
:hhh:

Early version of modern insurance companies, I’d say.

Also, republics and democracies tend to be susceptible to populists and tyrants....just like any other system. More so, maybe, as the will of the “people”/mob isn’t always dependable or rational. We’re still not out of the woods on this Trump situation. Hopefully it’s not just the first act of things to come, but it could be.

If you like reading then pick up Gibbons' book, "The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire"... Even if his conclusions are sometimes erroneous the level of detail into the many factors that combined to bring Rome down is a great read.
