I used to love that 'Hope I Don't Go Back', first time i heard 40 was on that Source Presents Hip Hop Hits Vol. 3, like 97-98 singles....Dude just has such an extensive catalouge. What are the essential 40 albums? Like a top 5. Dude has like 25 albums.

I'm really still getting into him myself but if no one has given you an answer I'll jump back on after work and recommend some albums.

Top 5 Essential 40?

1. In A Major Way - it's the jumpoff point, really.

2. The Element of Surprise - since it's a double album, you get the most varied sounds.
This is the only album with all of 40s core producers of the Mobb era. Studio Ton, Ant Banks,
Bosko, (the beginning of) Rick Rock, Tone Capone. Arguably the hardest song to start an album,
arguably the best song to end an album.

3. The Click/Game Related - alot of the general knowledge about 40 is on here,
such as his birthday, how the Click got their deal, what is Hurricane Ethel, etc.

4. Loyalty & Betrayal - this is the most..."West Coast" album, and in my opinion the last "Mobb Music"
album before the current era. This one has a lot of cuts that feel very "L.A.", probably because
this is the last album where he really fucced wit' Bosko, and Bosko was livin' in L.A. at the time.

5. My Ghetto Report Card - this is the one that was most well-received in it's time.

Mind you - these are not necessarily the "best", but they are the "essentials".
