Short answer of course being Stone Cold's rise. But i always felt like they couldve had a dope ass feud or even blowoff match. But its like Owen came in attacked HBK for a weeks to massive ovations then they just did the HBK/Taker feud and moved Owen down the card to HHH to feud over the european title which eventually resulted in the double turn.

Was it a matter of Austin being that hot, Real life tension still there, or the work of a shovel? :mjpls:

I don't think there was ever a real plan for an actual HBK-Owen program. They wanted Austin-HBK for WM14, so they wouldn't have had time to do much with Owen and HBK anyway since Owen returned to WWF in December '97 . They wanted to give Owen a big return by having him attack HBK a couple times, but the real plan for Owen involved a feud with Triple H, not HBK.

This is the real answer but it's not sexy enough for some

Plus even if Owen beat HBK for the belt it would have gone right back, because Austin refused to work with Owen

Ehhh they couldve had one match in the months leading up to WM14, couldve did it at the Royal Rumble but i admit its not as attractive as HBK vs Taker casket match.

He did in a short match in December, and it even looked like he was going to win before the DQ. A long PPV match wouldn't make sense, who did he beat for it? austin squashed him in like 3 minutes at Survivor Series.

There you have it folks, the correct answer. The usual geek suspects like OP wont accept it though. They need a conspiracy to ease their insecurities. :mjpls:
