For example, Fab "young og" sold 70,000 copies and people were praising the numbers

That 70,000 isn't doing much for anyone's bottom line.

Yeah, Cole and Drake sale a lot of record but you think the labels are depending on just them to make money and not everyone else

Record sales drop of every year and that trend has been going on for quite sometime

I'm saying that record labels do not care about sales they care about sales they have found other revenue sources and artist are very successful these days with lackluster sales

What I'm saying is that if in 2015 the music industry depended on record sales there would be no such thing as a music industry

But the music industry is thriving, the reason is because there are so many other ways artist can make money now

Take for example Future, his last album flopped in Coli terms but he is one of the hottest rappers in hiphop right now as is touring everywhere, plus his streaming numbers are probably enormous

Future is making money for the labels with a "flopped" album
Future my favorite but he dropped mixtapes cause the label ain't wanna put his album out cause Honest didn't do too well

Commas is prolly making the label some money but idk what he's doing to bring the label money unless he has a 360

All the GOATS sell well :manny:

The best new rappers always sell

J Cole
Kendrick
Drake

The wack ones flop

That's my point

Flopping doesn't equal disappointment.

Future is a in the top tier of being in demand without a flop

Future is hotter than Kendrick right now

You think the labels are rolling in dough because an artist went 1x platinum

Labels have to recoup their money...if the singles don't pop at radio then off course album sales matter

It's the only metric that matters because people are supporting you with their money.... they are more likely to buy your tickets as well

Is it any wonder the biggest selling artists have the biggest tours ?

It's always a disappointment

That's like saying a bank makes money on so much stuff, that when you take a loan and never pay it back, they don't care cause they made money elsewhere

Hell no. They might not care as much. But they damn sure will spend life and money, coming for that bread. Cause they are unhappy about it

Someone like future is hot. With no concrete numbers, no he isn't hotter than Kendrick. Stop living on the Internet. Go outside and ask 40 random people to name 3 future tracks vs 3 kendrick

And that's why I say labels always care. Cause they can't go off "b b b b but nikkas in the hood"

Nah they need actual numbers BEFORE they hand you money. Before you get a tour budget, they need a number they expect to show up and a number they expect to make.

So while future tour all the time, where he touring and how many showing? Now where's Kendrick touring and how many people show up? What can future charge for a feature? You think Kendrick charging less? You think Kendrick making more money on his tour, single, etc or future?

You gotta have numbers. Labels aren't blindly throwing money at dudes. If your sales and spins ain't high, neither is your budget. If they fukking suck, so will your chances at being anything but a mixtape rapper

Sales always will matter. They just aren't projected as high as they used to be. But ask anyone involved with a real label. They number crunch more than listen to music. Way more

Thinking.

In so many threads I see @Rapmastermind and a plethora of others talking about somebody flopped, or somebody did well with an album based on sales in 2015.

Albums are just used for promotion. Its a way to create a cycle where you can be in the public eye and generate tour interest.

There are no labels that depend on records sales to meet budgets or make or break their bottom-lines in 2015. You also have to factor in that it is cheaper than ever to make albums (No more super producers, No more outrageous charges for features)

The money is in touring, singles and appearances. Albums are needed to have a catalog of music to perform.

its been this way for about a decade

:yeshrug: but i gotta keep it real
-all dat shyt just sounds like a poor excuse for a wack untalented era of artist/music

Well you tagged me. So i'll address it. If you haven't figured out by now. I'm an analyst. I look at all fascist of things. So when I comment on sales it honestly more informational than "This is better than that". Acting like someone Sales are meaningless is to deny it's impact. Also if someone Flops and drops a weak or average album. You kind of understand. So when you analyze something you look at everything. Sales don't equal quality in all cases. Sometimes yes an artist sells, and the album is quality. "Chronic, Doggystyle, Ready To Die", All Sold, All Quality. There are other cases where we have something that sold a lot and it wasn't as quality as something sold a little like when "Illmatic" dropped and didn't go Gold for a few years. I agree with you that sales today have to be measured differently. No rapper is going Diamond ever again so Biggie, Tupac, Outkast, Hammer and Eminem made history period.

There's a couple of 9x, 8x platinum that are close but so we will see if they can get there eventually. I think you can have rappers that go Diamond with single digital. I think Eminem did it recently but again he's apart of the "sales" guard. The bottom line is I bring it up cause it's apart of the discussion or the success of what we are talking bout. My Top 5 Rap albums are not the Top 5 Highest selling rap albums. Even though "LAD" might be in that list, lol. If something is successful, it's successful. Of course the money is in "Touring". IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. Rappers, Singers, Rock Stars have been touring forever. Also the only way you can have a "Catalog" that end up giving you the ability to tour is you dropped Classics that guess what? Had an Impact or probably sold. 50 hasn't sold in a while but he can still Tour off his "Get Rich-Mass" era albums.
