Why do movie characters often have such stupid names?

If the actors go by their real names in several movies, it will cause confusion. An advice I got in a creative writing class it's recommended that you give main characters a unique name so they stand out and you try not to give them similar names to other characters in the same story (one Steve limit).

I'm not talking about EVERY film you dingbats 
There'd be nothing wrong with them going by their regular name in some of these movies, or even some variant of their name.
What would it have hurt for Shaq to go by Shaquille in the movie Blue Chips, rather than the name Neon Beaudeau? That's just a stupid name.
What would it have hurt for Amber Valetta to go by 'Amber' in the movie Hitch, rather than Allegra Cole. That's just an awful name. I couldnt even take the movie seriously after that.
I'm not talking about using their real name in a film where the actor is playing a serial killer or something...obviously that wouldn't be good for them off-camera or for marketing purposes.
