Why do muricans graduate "high school" ?

In London, our version of high school is college

what im trying to ask is why for high school do you guys bring out the gowns and hats? we only do that for uni over here, am i missing something?

Because it takes about 12-13 yrs to finish. Why not celebrate something that took that amount of time to finish when it's over with?

Yea but you are also ending your schooling unless you go to college. It took you 12+ yrs to get to that point. That's why at graduation ceremonies they often talk about your entire schooling not just the 4yrs.

I don't know the history behind why the gowns are worn. And college has graduation too.

Why not? We did the cap and gown thing for 8th grade graduation and kindergarten too

its 2-3 years but we dont graduate from that, we just get our diplomas etc etc and have a little celebration and then you have the choice to go to uni or what ever

Back in the days college was not needed for career status... So, many people celebrated the end of their formal education after high school...

Middle school graduation is a huge shindig as well. In NYC 40% of students will not make it to their hs graduation. So some parents use middle school (everyone gets pushed through) to celebrate their children.
