you're definitely talking about rap fans who grew up in the 90s, and were fans of the harder edged style of the times, and not early 80s rap fans who would be well in their 50s now. Besides, in rap's nascent days it was intermixed with Disco and the dance club/block party world, which explains why cats were dressed like this.
Generation gap. Both sides grew up in different times with different standards. It just happens that the old heads are not flexible enough to move with the times and are now stuck in their ways.
