Why do old people think video game consoles will "mess up" your tv?

My uncle (who is 60+) is a huge football fan recently bought a 55" Samsung to watch the games.

He also recently bought a used Xbox 360 with Madden 15 to go along with it.

Yet he prefers to play the 360 on his old CRT tv because "it messes up your tv" as he puts it.

Is there any truth behind this or is this just another example of old people being stupid and overly superstitious as usual?

This isn't the first time I've heard someone say something like that

plasma tvs can get image retention/burn-in. Play a game with a bright, static HUD for a long time and it can stay on the screen.

Burn in used to happen a lot from pausing the game and walking away from the tv for hours with out doing the common sense thing of turning the TV off.
