Any state under the Mason Dixon line is considered the south so MD would fall under that and is a southern state. Any state above the line is a northern state.Look it up.


ETA: I forgot to answer the question. I don't think it's just those states that are considered east coast, I just think those people decided to acknowledge where they live at as such whereas people from the southeast prefer to call themselves southern.

Same thing with the West Coast. People say east coast/west coast... they are talking about the beefs between the east, NYC, Philadelphia, and Boston, and the west, LA Oakland, Compton and Santa Barbara.
