Why do people think a cheap Xbox Series S will make some kind of difference?

Microsoft’s next gen strategy doesn’t look any different than their current strategy. Let me explain....

The current thinking now Is that a cheap 1080p Series X retailing at $299 will somehow win the console war for Microsoft due to price alone. First of all, there’s already on the market a cheap Xbox One S, yet it hasn’t outsold the more expensive Xbox One X nor has it done much to stop the PS4 juggernaut, so how will this be any different?

Clearly price isn’t the only deciding factor as we’ve seen from the cheap Switch Lite not outselling the more expensive Switch, nor did the 20gb 499 PS3 outsell the 599 60gb PS3. I can think of a lot of examples in tech where the more expensive product outsells it’s cheaper version. Value, and perception of it is just as, if not more important just price alone.

Another idea is that Gamepass will be a game changer next gen, especially if bundled with the cheap Series S but Gamepass is already a thing and has been for at least 3yrs, but somehow in November this 3yr product will suddenly become a hot service? Why? Are big third parties finally bringing their games on the service day one? Not likely.

Also this idea that we are in a recession and that gamers will become price conscious doesn’t hold weight. Video games have been booming in the last three months during big job losses and lockdowns and I can’t see that changing.

Apart from Xcloud which obviously will be a success but not in the near future, nothing about their next gen strategy is any different than the current one.

They have no winning strategy as the only gen they were competitive was when Sony dropped later with a more expensive machine that was difficult to develop for first 3 years of its existence. Sony still caught them in the end. They are trying to appeal to the largest demos with low barrier to entry options.

I also think their branding is confusing and it doesn't help to release two boxes at the beginning of a gen. All the crossgen games and with a entry/pro model at launch is really hard to sell needing that 12TF at all. This seems like a mid gen move at launch. They are thinking more is more but we'll see.

Their strategy is hot garbage. So the list of consoles for which developers will have to optimize their games are:

Xbox One S (1.31 TF)
Xbox One X (6 TF)
Xbox Series S (4 TF allegedly)
Xbox Series X (12 TF)

fukk kind of developer wants to do all of that?

Not only that, the Xbox One X was up until recently available for $299.99 bundled with a AAA game like Jedi: Fallen Order or Cyberpunk 2077 plus an extra controller. How the fukk can the Series S cost 299.99 as well? They need to launch that shyt at 199.99 with a game included or it’s DOA. Microsoft loves muddying the waters until no one knows which way is up. Dumbasses.

I don’t know how many times it has to be drilled into their stupid heads that content will decide the war not price. We are almost a few months into launch and they still haven’t shown a single game running on their supposed “worlds most powerful console“. Apart from Halo Infinite which looks like shyt, they’ve got nothing else major for the rest of the year or 2021, whilst PS5 first year is looking like their best first year ever.

bu bu bu Gamepass they’ll say :mjlol:

I honestly didn't think about it like that. It does make me wonder why people are all like ":whew: $15 for hundreds of games with a cheap console will be a no brainer!" but that can be done right now especially considering that the "hot game" that's supposed to be enticing will be available on current consoles. I know the retort will be "but soccer moms will get the latest toy for their child and a cheap box will be the better deal" but did this soccer mom not exist 4 years ago when the S came out? Game pass been out since 2017 so they had the "cheap console" out already that "had 4K/HDR" and the better console launching later that year.

It's like saying soccer moms will forego the Nintendo Switch and the Snes classic will outsell it since it comes bundled in with a bunch of games yet the Switch still sold like crack because it had better value and more quality games.

I don't doubt the console will probably sell decently but like others said, value and perception goes a long way. Game pass has had "100 games for $10~15/month" for a long time now and it hasn't moved the needle as far as PS4 sales go.

These mythical customers who love a cheap console bundled with Gamepass have obviously been in hibernation for the last 4yrs and will awaken from their slumber to snap up the Series S in their millions and win the war for Microsoft :troll:

Xflop has had gameass for 3 years while PS4 and Switch are projected to be both 120 million plus sellers and Sony and Nintendo are having record years.

Their strategy is flawed, oh you don't want to play on the worlds most powerful console, we have another one for you take a look at it, nah fukk that I'mma buy a ps5 instead since they got game.

I swear Microsoft is such a disappointment, Xbox one S, one X, series X, series S? Whose big idea was this? they don't even have any games to entice consumers to choose their product now mix that up with a stupid, confusing naming convention that no one asked for. they always do way too much and end up falling flat on their faces. XSX and XSS is going to get destroyed even worse than the one.

Their surface lineup is the same way, ridiculous.
