Why do poor to middle class people donate to presidential candidates?

Why do poor/middle class people play the numbers? Partially to annoy the people waiting behind them, who just want to put $20 on pump 9. Partially because they are trying to escape the poor/middle class by investing in uncertainties.

I don't get it either...I refuse to donate to any election. But isn't it a tax write off?
