The Virgin Islands were named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 after the legend of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 martyred virgins, calling them "Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes" (Saint Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins), a name later shortened to "The Virgins" (Las Vírgenes). He reportedly named Virgin Gorda ("Fat Virgin") because it looked like a reclining woman, and even named the area around St. Croix "Cape of Arrows" after a hostile encounter.
