Why do users act like they understand politics?

This is really aimed at 70% of TheColi edit: in TLR rn. I don't think a majority of users have a clue what is going on past the headlines of current events. Or dont know the process of anything, ESPECIALLY, geopolitics and funding. And just go around typing "both sides" when it's really not. It's lopsided as shyt. Almost every thread ends up being an embarrasment because users don't know what they're talking about and start putting their emotions into arguments. It's been like 400 Russian bot articles posted on here in the past few months. I don't care who you vote for but damn do some of yall even know how to decide who to vote for or do basic research?

Above the fray.
Board veered off into "smilie & shuck and jive-land" slightly ahead of the 2020 election. Large % of members wrote things in that period that made them lose credibility and they could never be taken seriously after that.

Have to add them to your ignore list, and just interact with people who aren't circus clowns.

My ignore list would be a mile long. It's just at this point I'm curious why people ACT like they care.

Americans largely have not been taught HOW to think.
And so few of us question things at anything more than a superficial level.

But the simplest thing people can do is try to verify information from trustworthy news sources.

Look, I understand that to SOME DEGREE, any news source will have some political lean.

That said, a story posted from AP, Reuters, NYT, Washington Post, WSJ, Axios, Newsweek (and there are others) tend to be more trustworthy than something from the far extremes of the spectrum. And certainly better than anything your stupid ass Twitter feed shows you from a random nobody.

So if you do see a wild, salacious story from an uncommon source, the first thing you should do is try to verify it by finding a similar story on a much more popular media outlet. That's at least a start.

The next step might be to ask yourself "who benefits?" from a certain narrative being shared. Because at least then you may be able to see if there's manipulation, propaganda or political games being played.

A major problem is that increasingly, since the 1970s, there has been a focus on being 1st with less of a focus on being accurate. And in this information/social media age where clicks and going viral is everything....it becomes harder for the truth to shine through.

The top rules in politics are:
  • Don't vote, that'll get their attention
  • Don't ever seriously engage politicians, a vague declaration like "tangibles" is more than enough
  • Don't organize or craft policy. This time could be better spent on the latest Internet Ass drama. What's that?! Somebody said the dance line on Soul Train came from Africa??? :martin:
