Yea I always wonder same thing, even ICE CUBE of all people gets hate from black people despite being one of the most pro black rappers ever :snoop:

I don't blame rappers for not caring about the black community :manny: look at how all those goons went after Ross for that mixtape cover and Zimmerman didn't get the same treatment despite killing a innocent black kid.

the conscious era of the late 80's/early 90's left many who were paying attention to Hip hop with the idea that community activism and enlightenment would be at the forefront of where rap music was going. Songs like Self Destruction, H.E.A.L. and All In The Same Gang...which saw all of the top rappers coming together for community awareness...manifested that idea... As gangster rap grew followed by the jiggy era.....there was a yearn for that consciousness of yesteryear. By 2005 once it was realized that the conscious era would never return in hip Hop some still feel and yearn for that idea of yesteryear. Capitalism destroyed community activism that once existed in hip Hop. Its all about getting that paper by any means now.

Honestly this is a good thread with a good point. I agree that you shouldn't expect all rappers to speak on social issues. That's just not the way some guys are, and these are just regular people. I don't expect them to be someone that they're not. How many people on the coli are involved in some sort of social movement or trying to bring about change in the world?

And while yes there was early rap that had a social message, the very first rap song was bragging money/material things, so I can't really hate on people if they want to go that route. Not everyone wants to make some depressing ass music about the harsh realities of life.
I got bodyguards, I got two big cars
That definitely ain't the wack
I got a Lincoln continental and a sunroof Cadillac
So after school, I take a dip in the pool
Which really is on the wall
I got a color TV so I can see
The Knicks play basketball
Hear me talking bout checkbooks, credit cards
More money than a sucker could ever spend

Although yes guys like Jay Z have money/power and can possibly have an influence on things, and are in a better position than most to be effective.

But the bigger issue I have is that there are some rappers who do speak on social issues and are more conscious rappers, and yet they don't get any attention or airplay they deserve. People complain about the big guys who don't speak on positive shyt, yet completely ignore the (few) small guys who do.

Cats should take responsibility in their community if they wanna be considered leaders but if they don't want to no one should pressure them. Jigga wants to be a leader, Kanye wants to be a leader etc then they should play their part of fall back on calling themselves leaders. But we have other rappers who wanna consider themselves leaders and they're not doing shyt besides making money by creating entertainment of other nikkas misery and these people get no shyt at all. There's no expectations for them at all etc..

Only for people like 50 cent, Jay, Puff etc.. Cats who actually do shyt for people in real life.

Just like we have Bill Gates who wants to be a leader and he acts accordingly then we had Steve Jobs who didn't want to be a leader (until he was about to pass away) and acted accordingly.
