Because people don’t want to expel any extra effort long term, and lack discipline and would rather take the easy way out

Because it’s easier to do nothing than it is to do something.

In 2020, I can see a lot of resolutions probably got ruined because things became more challenging than people had expected due to Covid-19 (i.e. going to the gym for example).

We've all been living under these conditions for nearly a year though, so now if you actually want to keep your resolutions it becomes a question of self-discipline.

Some books that will help if you read them carefully and implement their lessons:

A lot of people attach too much significance to the “when”. I like the new year bc I like auspicious dates. But I also understand that the 1st has significance because I decide it does. At the end of the day, the date doesn’t have power but the intention does.

In short, people lack the discipline needed for
whatever they want the most

True, people put significance on it because it's the first day, but really if they decide to wait until that date they just need to take it as a personal cue. The first day doesn't really have any more significance that the 2nd day or the 12th day. The "day" is what one makes it.

Old, but start small. Instead of 1 hour of reading starting on new years or whenever, start with 5 minutes and build up. Instead of the gym every day, gym once a week and build up. People just promise goals that are too big. And in truth, you should start as soon as you can, waiting for some specific day is just days lost and demotivation if something goes wrong. There are reminder apps too, they center around productivity, these apps can alert you to complete your task. Hell, even with the gym, you can start at home with some 15 minute hiit workout on youtube and build up to the gym. So I wouldn't say it's not wanting to work hard or actually accomplish something, they just set unrealistic goals, they have essentially set themselves up for failure without even realizing it.

easily get to discouraged

really unfounded expectations

Poor, unrealistic, and lazy expectations is why most people fall short at goals in general.

Everyone's say they gonna finally lose weight at the beginning of the year. But when they find out even with an intensive daily regime they may be down just 10 pounds tops by April they say fukk it. Same thing with other resolutions like starting a hobby. Folks say they gonna study an instrument or an art medium for a new year. All types of grandiose beliefs of becoming masterful at something in just a few months for the "new year." But when they find out they ain't gonna be Picasso status selling $10,000 pieces at auctions or cutting albums with milllions of fans waiting in such a short time they just blissfully let go of their resolution. Some folks think they can speak things into existence and dip into shyt that takes long term or even a lifetime commitment to accomplish.

Individual efforts don’t change systemic causes.

Almost every resolution is directly linked to a systemic failure or inequity.
