And would the league ever show a super bowl on cable?

Highly unlikely imo....

They making their money, but compared to what the other networks pay and receive in content, ESPN pays twice as much for least valued package.

im sure ESPN is content with MNF drawing huge ratings and having plenty of other sports to take up the rest of the day/night.

ESPN’s agreement will allow it to further secure its role as the cable channel with more N.F.L. content than any other except for the NFL Network. ESPN will expand its use of video highlights and add 500 hours of league-branded studio shows almost immediately, including adding a third hour to the Sunday show “NFL Countdown.” It will now start at 10 a.m. Eastern.

espn is fine breh

The other networks that carry the NFL will similarly face increases when they renew their deals. News Corp.'s Fox shells out $730 million annually, and CBS ponies up $625 million for its Sunday afternoon games. Each of the three could end up joining ESPN in paying 10 figures per season by the time their contracts expire.

ABC didn't wanna deal with how much it cost to invest in football on a weekly basis. Therefore, it wasn't worth it to keep it on network TV and the ratings didn't justify it (ABC on the low has to be one of the brokest networks ever. They always dead popular shyt because it costs too much. Watch them cancel Scandal out of the blue if it fukks with their budget)

Once ABC gave up their willingness to show football, they left that to ESPN altogether. Unfortunately for them, it means the NFL threw ABC /ESPN in the bushes after Superbowl XL since cable money <<< network money
:what:

DIsney owns ABC and ESPN. What sense would it make to put a sports program(MNF) on network television, when you own the biggest sports channel?:why:

For the same reason you'd never see an NFL game on Fox Sports 1, NBCSN and CBS Sports Network

Cable money <<< Network money. Despite everyone having cable, that has never changed.

If MNF wasn't draining ABC's pockets, they'd still be airing it.

They pay like twice as much as the other 3 networks just to air 1 game a week. They get damn near the shyttiest game each week. They are not even apart of the Super Bowl rotation.

I know they are still probably making a profit, but it's mind blowing how they are getting raped versus what the other networks pay and receive content wise.
ESPN is the prison bytch and The NFL is the booty warrior: They have no choice but to submit :manny:

Network television gets more viewers by simple virtue of the channels technically being available to everyone with a tv. So, ideally, you want your biggest games on network, instead of cable.

You're right. And if I remember it correctly, he sort of is too. At the time ABC bailed on MNF, they were in the middle of retooling their identity/lineup to what it is now (tons of female-centric programming, with sports mainly as filler on weekends/holidays). Keeping MNF would quite them to give up an entire night of programming at the beginning of the week for something that their new target audience doesn't care for. It's part of why the entire BCS ended up on ESPN instead of staying on ABC.
