I'm remember somebody saying that Donald Goines used the term in his writing, and that it was Detroit slang originally ie "checking traps"

Atlanta definitely popularized it to the point that it belongs to them to me.

I heard East coasters say things like "well Philly nikkas been sipping cough syrup since the seventies!" to defend themselves doing something that's considered southern culture.

That might be true, but Texas and the south were the ones that popularized it, you not sipping drank cause of Philly nikkas be for real.

Seagram used it on souls on ice too. I think back in the day it was more of a pimp's terminology though.
Where the rats get their cheese or where bees get their honey is where i always assumed this came from.

I don't think trap houses is derived from it though. I always understood this definition to be because of the no way out limitation that the dope game entails. Either this or the house it originated from was located on a dead end street somewhere in the south.

Just because you popularize something doesn't mean you used get credit for it

Above the fray.

The cities of Philly and Houston have a deep connection that I've never been able to figure or trace.
It's not from the great migration and I don't think it was a drug route.

??

I'm not sure about the origin of the term trap, but Mr. Scarface's first album covered all the stuff that trap rappers talk about now, except he actually has talent.
