My guess is Somewhere along the line it got to the point where the places where it went down at just became "The trap" and trapping with the rise of on the block drug dealing.

I don't think trap houses is derived from it though. I always understood this definition to be because of the no way out limitation that the dope game entails. Either this or the house it originated from was located on a dead end street somewhere in the south.
