That was actually a good read. If I remember correctly I think the US exclusive patents on drugs is 12 years. There's no reason for it to be that long. I understand the " innovation angle", but 12 years doesn't seem feesible.Remember, dikk pills sell not because they're solving a public health need, but because theres a market for it.
Incentive is a major component no one wants to discuss.
I've worked in labs where researchers discovered major drugs and that caused the institution to dump millions more into finding more discoveries.

oh, and lets not pretend any of this itself is free...theres a lot of loans given out as well. Its not just grants and altruistic endeavors.
I mean these machines, tools, and supplies are REALLY expensive.
Oh, and you're talking about very educated people who invested years and years of their lives into learning how to even do this stuff. That requires compensation.

Well frankly they charge what they can get.
So like in India the average person can't afford what the average American can so they just charge less but make it back in volume.
And intellectual property defense is a huge issue since drug patents are often outright stolen. There's a multitude of reasons.
One under appreciated or acknowledged aspect is that americans often bear he brunt of the societal investment that brings forth these drugs more than anyone else since America does most of that work. I

1. They charge more because americans are wealthier and are a larger market
2. US R&D supplants the rest of the world.
How does us rd supplant the world? Is it easier to science outside of the us?

The USA does more research than several of the next major countries combined. It's that simple.
