Illmatic blows 7DT out the water. Much better production. Lyrically more advanced. People forget that 7DT was initially viewed as a let down.
Plus every song on Illmatic is a bonafide classic hip hop record save one time for your mind.
When it comes to those two albums I think your going to get a preference depending on what the listener is looking from for an album. To me every song from both albums is classic. But I just feel 7DT is more diverse, like something like Hail Mary was an anthem type track that Illmatic didn't really have, don't take anything away from it but that's not the type of album it was, I always saw Illmatic as an ill concept album, To Live And Die In L.A, Blasphemy I thought was a superb song, has everything, passion, game, delivery, mood, like that second verse for instance I thought was just some powerful shyt. 3rd verse was ill too. He went pretty deep on that shyt. It hits you powerfully if you like that type of shyt. Certain type of street dudes who been through struggle shyt love that kind of shyt, I don't really see it as a case of right or wrongs but preference. But I just felt 7DT had like a bit of everything. Krazy, White Manz World, some of these songs are amoung my favourite Hip Hop songs ever. The emotion that pours out, is deep, and powerful, personally that gives it the edge to me as a listener. I remember playing White Manz World to a friend who father deserted them and they had never met, he was deeply deeply touched by that song, I think Illmatic connects in a different way, so it's always gonna come down to what hits you the most as listener. Even Me And My Girlfriend I thought was done in such an ill way, and created a classic track, was just the passion and delivery, you kind of believed the track. Obviously I know he was inspired by I Gave You Power which is also a classic song, and technically overall arguably better, but Pac's emotion and passion in his delivery was tough for anyone to overcome. He was a great songmaker. Hold Ya Head too, some of the shyt he's saying is just deep. And Against All Odds was just some eerie classic shyt. Cause it feels real. But like I've said, Illmatic is one of my favourite albums, I put it above a lot of shyt. Of the actual tracks I don't feel there's any filler, but I felt it was an introspectiveness laid back album, 7DT took me through more of a range of more emotions, and hit me more powerfully so that's why I have to choose it.
